PLANNING A FIELD TRIP TO THE FARM?
Students benefit from visiting the farm because it provides an opportunity to discover and learn about agriculture, participate in hands-on activities, have real-world experiences, and foster a better understanding of agriculture.
Consider planning a trip to a local farm this fall. Feel free to use our resources as you work through the planning process.
Approximately 1.5 million children under the age of 20 live, work, or have a regular presence on farms in the United States (CDC.gov). We realize the importance of keeping those youth safe in their agricultural settings. Take advantage of our resources to establish effective safety measures for on-farm operations. Gain entry to our exclusive AgHub and unlock the Farm Safety for Youth learning portal.

Opportunity Costs. We hear that often when we talk about economics and the value of our time. As students are coming back into the classroom this fall set up an activity for them to put opportunity costs into perspective. Have them list decisions they made this summer, decisions to work a job, go to the pool, and buy a vehicle, etc… Then have them think about other options to that decision and what financial or cost repercussions that caused. Once they have those listed out, you can have a discussion about opportunity costs, costs of something you didn’t do, or a decision you could have made. It’s a great way to put somewhat abstract concepts into real-life scenarios.
An agriculture instructor’s work is never done, as we all know. It is a constant rotation between teaching, Career Development Events, conferences, camps, and the list goes on. One of the best ways we can recommend to bust burnout throughout the year is locating a support group of peers. Attend that summer agriculture teacher’s conference, find some professional development that will put you with those who have similar interests. By locating that support group of peers, content sharing, idea swapping and just general support is sure to come!
